How often do we need to check my cat for worms?

  • We recommend checking your kitten for intestinal parasites at their regular wellness visit, and then annually (as recommended by the CDC) or more frequently if your cat develops diarrhea.
  • We will perform a fecal examination in house. If your cat has persistent signs of GI parasites (such as chronic diarrhea or weight loss), we may also recommend sending off a fecal PCR panel which will test for genetic material from over 20 intestinal parasites.

How do I know if my cat has ear mites?

Ear mites cause cats to have extremely itchy ears. Ear mites are most common in kittens or cats that spend time outdoors. Indoor cats may be more likely to have an ear infection than ear mites. Your veterinarian may offer an ear cytology and/or an ear mite smear to determine if your cat has ear mites and/or a concurrent ear infection.

What products do you recommend to prevent fleas in my cat?

  • At our veterinary hospital we offer Revolution, Revolution Plus or Bravecto. Revolution is best for puppies and kittens smaller than 5 lbs.
  • Revolution Plus prevents heartworms, treats ear mites, and prevents Hookworms and roundworms. This medication must be applied topically to the skin between the shoulder blades every 30 days.
  • Bravecto is a good option for cat owners who like convenience. This topical medication is applied to the skin between the shoulder blades and lasts for 3 months to prevent fleas and ticks.
